‘Broxbourne stay patient – playing the ‘long game’ for a deserved 5-1 win over a tough Rickmansworth side’

Match Report: 28/10/17

With a smaller squad and some key midfielders missing Broxbourne knew they would all need to be on top of their game to win again this week.
Broxbourne started the game slowly and struggled to retain possession, Rickmansworth (like Aylesbury two weeks ago) looked dangerous on the break and the Broxbourne defense needed some tight one to one marking to ensure we didn’t get caught by some strong hits into the circle and some good Rickmansworth deflections.
The first half was unlucky for Broxbourne, with two goals dis-allowed from some sharp short corner work and a lucky touch in the circle for Rickmansworth Broxbourne needed all of their efforts just to go in at half time on an equal footing with the opposition at 1-1.
With a really positive half time team talk and the understanding that we needed to stay patient and stick to our game plan Broxbourne were ready for the challenge of the second half!
Just minutes after the whistle Broxbourne played some sweet ‘one – twos’ up the left hand side to create the opening we had been hoping for, and after this Broxbourne couldn’t stop scoring!
Champagne moment could have gone to a number of players this week, Darcy performed a fabulous spin (straight from the Spencer coaching handbook) in the circle to set up Charlotte for a simple tap in. But it was Meg Thomas running with the ball from defense who created the fourth goal for Broxbourne who took away the champagne!
By the end of the match the score line suggested it had been an easy win for Broxbourne this week, but we knew we how hard we had fought to create our chances – and with all the forwards appearing on the score sheet the percentage of chances being converted into goals has been the biggest difference for the team this year.
Christmas is one week closer and Broxbourne are still top of the table.
The Rickmansworth Coach commented: ‘You were are very well organised team, we did all we could to hold you back, but we simply ran out of steam in the second half.’
