After arriving at St Albans, negotiating shut gates and blocked off areas, we all arrived in good time for a warm up, quick pee and team chat; well, most of us ?
For the first 15/20 minutes, St Albans had a different idea to how this game was going to pan out and with a few of us playing out of position, it didn’t look like it was going be an easy game for us.
We took the lead from a Charlotte Hartwick-Green goal picked off one of their defenders and flicked in past their defence at an impossible angle, however they quickly got it back with a pretty simple one ? but to be fair she did hit it quite sweetly on the reverse, keeping it flat and straight, but sometimes simple is best. Other than that, they had a couple of short corners which didn’t come to anything.
After finding ourselves level again, we brushed ourselves down and sorted ourselves out and off we went. The rest of the game was pretty much all us with Poppy coming back and tidying up any loose breakaways.
Some quite spectacular goals, 2 from Jess turning and shooting at the top of the D, a nicely positioned shot from the P-spot by Kelly and a slightly wayward reverse strike (classssic us) from Vic came pinging across the D was put into the back of the net with some ninja style jump preventing it going flying off the pitch and smacking it down into the goal. This was even complimented by the umpire who was heard to say ‘well… you don’t see that everyday!’. Little did they know she has done it before and is well known for her ‘drag flicks’.
5 goals and lots of compliments from the umpires at the end, it was overall a good day!
Player of the match was a joint win for Charlotte Hartwick-Green and Jess Iszatt for getting two goals each.
