Weekend Round Up 6/7th February 2022

Saturday 5th February 2022

Mens 1st team travelled to Chelmsford. Chelmsford started the game quickly and put Broxbourne under early pressure. They deservedly went ahead through a well worked corner which was deflected into the goal. However it was Broxbourne who responded through a corner of their own with a Mitch Chapman flick rebounding to Sam Groves who pushed it into the goal. Despite fighting back into the game, Chelmsford piled on the pressure before half time and grabbed another 2 goals to make it 3-1 at the break. After half-time Broxbourne upped their performance levels and Stan Mason finished off a smart move to make it 3-2. A key save from the Chelmsford keeper from a Sam Groves deflection proved a key moment as Broxbourne pushed for the equaliser. Chelmsford extended their lead though after winning the ball high up the pitch and finishing the ball into the corner. Chelmsford continued to press and scored another goal before Brox pulled one back through a great pass into the D by Charlie, who was excellent all day, which was deflected into the roof of the net by Sam. Despite showing fight, Chelmsford were relentless and scored a couple more goals before the end of the game to make it 7-3.

Mens 2s had a much more successful day being the only mens team to claim a win this week. 4-0 win against St Albans M4s at home kept the home supporters cheering them on all game. Read Joe’s full match report here.

Mens 3s travelled away to play Bedford M4s. They decided to take the 1h45 scenic route (scenes being traffic jams) and only arrived with a generous 1 minute warm up time remaining before push back. Thanks to KP who stepped in goal after a last minute failed fitness test by Pod! The team were not discouraged by this and Kitch scored to make it 1-1 at half time. The second half did not go quite as much in the Broxbourne team’s favour and 2 further goals were conceded. Final score 3-1 to Bedford. Overall a fairly miserable day for the M3s.

Mens 4s finished a long day of 5 home games at the Badger Field off with a very close battle against a Royston M3s. With 4 on the bench the M4s used both their youthful and experienced legs to keep goal for goal with the Royston team for most of the game. 1-1 at half time, then 2-2 in the second half, however towards the end as Royton managed to sneak a 3rd goal the Broxbourne team were not quite able to match and the final whistle blew on 3-2 to Royston.

The Ladies 1s returned to the second half of their National League campaign with a home game against Beeston L2s. Going 1-0 up in the first period of the game put the Broxbourne team on the front foot as they played some excellent team hockey. Unfortunately, Beeston found an equaliser from a short corner in the second quarter. Broxbourne continued to play well and despite the opposition’s best efforts to injure the whole team, they kept the score line level and finished on a draw taking away 1 point.

The Ladies 2s availability has taken a turn this side of the Xmas break and they were able to field an impressive team of 14 for their game for the second week in a row! Some of the best hockey the 2s can play was seen in the first half of the game. Lots of passing the ball around and creating opportunities gifted the first goal which came from a reverse stick shot from Cerys, which was aided into the back of the goal by the goal keeper’s arm and shear confusion from the rest of the team. 1-0 up at half time. The second goal came from a well-executed short corner routine to give Vic the ball on the P-spot which she put home for goal 2. The 3rd and final goal came from a beautiful attacking run from Meg T at left back who drove right into the D and smacked it straight into the bottom corner of the goal. Final score 3-0 to Broxbourne.

The Ladies 3s were very unlucky to not take any points away from their 1-2 defeat to Berko Hemel L2s. Read the full match report here.

The Ladies 4s managed to add 6 more goals to their top of the table tally with a 6-1 win at home to Potters Bar L2s. Read the full match report here.

The Ladies 5s travelled away to Bishops Stortford for a morning game against their L7s. 2 lovely goals on her debut game from youngster Alice put them 2-0 up and in good spirits and earned her player of the match. Some interesting air swing passes from captain Jen in the middle, and shear determination from the Stortford side, they unfortunately found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-2 final score line. Some excellent defending from Lorraine kept the Stortford score to just 3. Ella took away Donkey of the Day award for turning up late and then falling over!

Sunday 6th February

The U14s girls played an 11-a-side friendly game against Hertford girls U14s. Many of them playing in their first full pitch game. It was a close and well fought battle with a 1-1 draw finish. Well done to all the juniors involved.

The Ladies 2s had a rearranged 2nd round of their Tier 3 England Hockey Cup game against visitors Norwich Dragons. A great 5-0 win sees them into the next round, which will most likely be at home on 19th February. Read the details of all 5 goals in the full report here.

All in all, a good weekend for the 2s!
