Broxbourne vs. Bedford (0-6) Saturday, 19th October 2019

By Alice Brown

Broxbourne opened their doors to host their second Ladies 1st XI National League game of the season against Bedford, a team who in previous seasons the Badgers have struggled with logistics in attempting to attend the game, in addition to making an impact on the score line. The stakes were high for the home side, who have yet to secure a point after their first win against Ipswich at the beginning of the season, with further pressure coming after confirmation from England Hockey’s Director of Competition Steve Turner confirming that the 9th placed team in the league are at risk for relegation.

As always, the dedicated Broxbourne fanbase packed out the stadium and were hoping for a second win of the day, after the men’s First XI clinched a 2-1 victory over St. Albans. After a lengthy warm up, Bedford took the first push back to get the game underway…

If you were fortunate enough to be one of the Blue and Pink army not watching on Saturday, I will spare you the pain of a word for word description on how the game culminated in a 6-0 loss for the Badgers. Instead, we look outside for inspiration to help contextualise this loss, and pose the questions “Just how bad can it be?”, as we review some of sport’s worse losses across history:

Bromsgrove vs. South Leicester (Midlands Rugby): South Leicester are enduring a miserable season, conceding over 100 points in every game but one since the beginning of the season. This Saturday was no exception as they were crushed 240-0 by Bromsgrove- to put into context that’s a try just under every two minutes for the entire game. However, the defeat does not match that of Belgian rugby club, Royal Kituro who won 356-3 in 2015 (that’s a try just over every minute of the game). Badger reflection: Despite conceding three goals in under eight minutes in the first quarter, the game finished with a goal per minute ratio 11mins40secs and a clean sheet in the second quarter.

DC United vs. Toronto FC (Major League Soccer): Wayne Rooney’s US domestic football career came to a crashing end this weekend with a 5-1 defeat in the play offs. The Washington based team conceded four goals in a 12-minute spell and had a player sent off late in the game to seal the crushing defeat. Badger reflection: Despite continuous efforts of left back Lisa Banahan attempting to get sin binned, the team finished the game with a clear discipline record.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Michigan Wolverines (NCAA basketball): While North Carolina clinched a 77-71 win in the championship game of 1993, it was the manner in which the Tar Heels won the game. Wolverine Chris Webber called a timeout at the end of the game despite Michigan having already used their allotted numbers, with the impromptu decision conceding a penalty, and thus the championship. It’s been dubbed one of the worst decisions in sport, with others claiming that Chris Webber was paid to fix the game; however, Webber was one of (if not, the most famous) member of Michigan’s Fab Five whose swag and attitude changed the culture of basketball forever. Badger reflection: Lasting impact on sport can be so much more than winning games.

As we conclude this week’s slightly rogue media topics, the team moves forward to regain winning ways with another home game vs. Canterbury next weekend. The Badgers have been taking inspiration from all over, with Kerri Marshall attending a football conference on Saturday evening, and other members of the team returning to basics on Sunday morning to learn from the Baby Badger sessions to repeat affirmations “Accuracy before Power”, “Don’t dribble when you can pass”, and “Space is your friend”.

As always, we would like to thank our fans and all those supporting us this season, we are looking forward to finally putting three points in the bank on home turf.
