Broxbourne 2 St Albans 1

Broxbourne made it six wins from six in Prem B on Saturday against a strong St Albans outfit. Four of the regulars were unavailable this week. McPhil was scouting talent in Yorkshire, Mason was finding drinks sponsorships in Leeds, whilst Hoppo and Fradley were off doing some warm weather training in Espanyol. This saw a debut for Sam Groves and a return of Louis’ older but smaller brother Ben back into ranks.

The change in team didn’t seem to upset the fast free-flowing style of the team in the first half, with Broxbourne having most of the ball as well as chances through short corners. Credit to be given to St Albans keeper, leaping and diving miraculously to keep out some good flicks from M Chapman and Scarrott. St Albans managed to steal a goal through well worked movement from open play, with the striker burying the chance giving Thomas no chance. This seemed to give the away team confidence, winning several short corners, with Thomas making some fine saves, especially to a flick destined for the bottom corner. The rest of the half saw neither team create many more chances and half time Broxbourne found themselves behind.

Coach Sam at half time pushed the urgency and wanted the team to move around the keeper instead of trying to go through him. Broxbourne kept bombarding the St Albans D, creating more and more pressure on the defence and keeper. The goal finally came through a well worked short corner. M Chapman wobbled through the first runner, slipped it left to an open B Scarrott who made no hesitation in burying the flick to the side netting. This gave the badgers more confidence and more chances came. Broxbourne took the lead 10 minutes from the end, a flick could only be pushed away to Blemkin, who calmly slotted the ball into the goal.

Thomas kept the score at 2-1 with another close save from a deflection, pushing the ball over the bar. J Chapman made some last ditch tackles to deny any more upsets to the badgers win streak. With 2 minutes to go, Broxbourne had a couple more chances to bury the game. Gilbert managed to miss a deflection opportunity, only to end up crashing into the goal post, and L Scarrott had a reverse stick shot denied by the inside of the post.

Broxbourne look to increase their winning streak as they travel to Havering next Saturday.
