Penultimate game welcomes another record.

The Ladies 4xi had their final home fixture of the season weekend against Berkhamsted and Hemel 3xi.

In the previous meeting between the two teams, it resulted in not only a draw (so far the team’s only match they have not won) but also what felt like a trip to Antarctica! Luckily though the sun was out and the affectionately named ‘Top Tosser’ Tors (THANK YOU SUE THOMAS) was able to win the end to avoid being blinded by the sun.

Knowing that they are unable to be caught, Broxbourne were also aware that the battle for 2nd place was very much on for Berko and next week’s opposition Blueharts and this could lead to a challenging game.

Similar to last week, Brox found themselves defending for the first few minutes and some fantastic Kung fu keeper reactions from Georgia saw the goal line cleared. After Berko began flooding the D, Broxbourne experienced a rarity and conceded the first goal (thanks to a wonderful kick over the line from the Berko forward, which was unfortunately not seen by the umpires).

This provided the much-needed rocket for The Badgers. They started to regain their composure and fell back into the familiar; building the play up the pitch through slick, successful passing.

The teamwork and outstanding ‘one-twos’ wrong footed Berko on a number of occasions and the home side were able to find the equaliser. Within minutes, the ball was back in the attacking D and in the goal for a second.

During the later stages of the first half, some spaces opened up and some fantastic well-weighted passes from Alice found the attacking force of Thommo and Brawny, who sent them past the keeper.

The defence stood strong, against the drives down the pitch, Sue proving herself to be a fantastic impenetrable wall on the right.

The ‘legs’ of Amelia and Ella helped bring the ball forward, along with Laura, whose skill often stole possession from Berko and with the fantastic partnership of Fixy and Meg on the right, Broxbourne slotted (and trickled) a few more over the line to end the first half 5-1 up.

Moving back to the usual formation and with Berko coming out determined in the second half, the goals didn’t come as freely, but Brox were able to find the goal 2 more times and this resulted in Brawny taking the chance to equal her all-time goal scoring record, which was set 30 years ago (and before at least 3 of our team were born!).

Roisin came alive in the second half ,holding strong as a back at the left, and frustrating the runners by restricting their paths and stealing the ball and Tors was able to provide support to switch the direction of play and play the ball around the Berko press.

As tiredness set in, Frankie was able to relieve any last minute pressure by powering the ball down the pitch, which allowed Brox to press and cut out the majority of hit outs.

Goals this week came for Thommo (x3), Brawny (x3) and Laura (x1).

Thank to all our supporters today. Great to see you all in the sunshine!

Next weeks final match against Blueharts is away and we are excited as we actually have the chance to play at the Lucas Lane club pitch and not the Boys School, which means no drive to teas!!

As well as the match, we are celebrating back at the club after so look forward to closing the season in style!!
