Badger buckle, being broken down
We started with strong words from stand in skipper fradley talking and keeping structure and doing the basics well! The matched started evenly with both team pressing up the pitch having moments in the D. Then an unfortunate foot resulted in a well trained short corner routine making it 1-0 to Stevenage Broxbourne were patient working hard in the middle and gus help the ball up we’ll linking with baller and kp resulting in a short corner. What ko flew into the net “minor deflection” to make it 1-1. We continued to apply pressure trying to brake down the Stevenage defence. At half time we were relatively happy woth our work and optimistic about the second half! Unfortunately so were Stevenage and they came out the blocks faster winning more 50/50’s creating chances then an unfortunate mix up in the D left fordy exposed making it 2-1 as we started chasing the game decisions became rash and before we knew it it was 4-1 a quality finish from gus made it 4-2 at the end. A good effort but a disappointing result.

Ladies 3s vs Stevenage 2 - 2-0 loss
Player: Emma
Donkey: Aaliyah
Valentine’s Day hockey always has a certain romance to it… unless, of course, you’re one of the players who decided they loved skiing more than their teammates. With a few absences carving up the slopes instead of the pitch, Broxbourne Ladies 3s arrived half-expecting the match to be cancelled. But the sun clearly had a soft spot for hockey and insisted the game go ahead.
Thankfully, Rosie and Bryony stepped in like absolute heroes, giving the squad the boost it needed. And from the first whistle, Broxbourne played with real intent. The first half was a tight, competitive battle, ending 0–0 thanks to disciplined defending, sharp passing, and some genuinely impressive team structure.
The second half saw Broxbourne take even more control, dominating possession and keeping Stevenage pinned back for long spells. But sport can be cruel. Against the run of play, Stevenage managed to sneak in two goals, leaving Broxbourne frustrated but far from defeated in spirit.
One thing that absolutely wasn’t in doubt was the performance of Emma, who delivered yet another standout display. Her cat‑like reflexes kept Broxbourne in the game time and time again, earning her a thoroughly deserved Player of the Match.
At the other end of the awards spectrum, Aaliyah claimed Donkey of the Day—partly for being young and annoyingly skilful enough to frustrate the opposition, and partly for launching her smoothie across a very busy McDonald’s. A memorable contribution in its own right.
Despite the scoreline, the team put in a huge shift, played some of their best hockey of the season, and showed real grit and togetherness.
A Valentine’s Day full of effort, laughs, and a few questionable beverage‑handling decisions.
Ladies 4s vs Blueharts 5 - 3-1 win
Goal scorers: Meg H x2 & Ella
Assists: Jo x2 & Ella
Player: Emma & Ella
Donkey: Meg & Lisa
Broxbourne Ladies 4s made the glamorous late-afternoon trek to Blueharts for a rearranged 3pm start – that awkward time where you’re not sure if you should’ve had a second lunch or an early tea.
With some much-appreciated reinforcements from the 5s, the 4s proudly rolled up with a squad of 13. Depth! Luxury! Options! A special shoutout to Emma for stepping up in goal and, as always, being absolutely on fire (metaphorically, not like the sauna incident).
After a quick team talk featuring tactical brilliance (“just talk, pass and remember the press”) and a solid 20-minute warm-up, preparations were briefly paused for some extremely serious business: Frankie’s Valentine’s Instagram photo shoot. Nothing says laser focus like rearranging sticks and feet for the perfect angle. Content first, hockey second.
With photos secured for social media immortality, the 4s were ready. And this week? The 4s meant business. Actual, serious, give-us-those-points business.
First Quarter: Blink and You’ll Miss It
Within five minutes, a beautifully worked short corner saw Rachael inject to Jo, who slipped it to Ella. The keeper made the initial save (slightly rude), but Meg was there like a hawk at a picnic and calmly popped it over the line. 1–0. Thank you very much.
Barely FOUR minutes later, the right-hand side became the Rachael and Meg Show. Slick passing, great movement, and at one point Meg falling over her own legs… only to get straight back up and continue dribbling like it was all part of the master plan. We love commitment to the bit.
Another short corner followed. Rachael delivered again, finding Ella. After a bit of chaos in the D and a recycle from Jo back to Ella, she struck once more. A Blueharts defender got a touch… but not enough. Over the line it went. 2–0 to Broxbourne, and the 4s were briefly wondering who this clinical, composed team was.
A Little Bit of Drama
The early goals set the tone – strong passing, constant chatter, and serious determination. In fact, there was so much chatter that a 14-year-old Blueharts player felt the need to politely suggest the Broxbourne defence “shut up.”
Mission temporarily accomplished… because in the very next passage of play, Lisa kindly passed the ball straight to Blueharts, who gratefully accepted and went on to score. 2–1. You’re welcome.
Before the Break
The 4s were absolutely not letting that be the half-time score. A great ball found Jo, who drove powerfully through the middle. Just as a Blueharts player attempted to shut her down, she slipped a perfectly weighted pass through to Meg, who made a brilliant run at the keeper and calmly secured her second. 3–1 at half time. Order restored.
Half-time consisted of a quick chat, tactical tweaks, and sweets – because elite athletes obviously require Haribo.
Second Half: Dig Deep
Blueharts came out with a formation change and made Broxbourne work for every inch. The game became tighter, scrappier, and a proper battle.
With about 15 minutes to go, Ivy took an unfortunate shoulder/stick to the cheek and was left feeling light-headed. Broxbourne players were immediately on hand to make sure she was okay, ice pack applied, and thankfully she recovered well. Hockey family looking after hockey family.
Chances came at both ends, but no further goals were added – largely thanks to some brilliant saves from Emma, who kept things solid at the back when it mattered most.
Final Whistle
The energy stayed high, the vibes were immaculate, and the 4s proved that a 3pm rearranged fixture is prime time for peak performance. From defensive grit to attacking flair (and the occasional self-inflicted trip), it was a performance full of heart, humour, and hustle.
Points were the aim – and the 4s proudly took them home.
Player of the Match: Emma & Ella
Donkey of the Day: Meg & Lisa (for reasons we absolutely won’t elaborate on… but we all know)
