Captain Lisa’s Birthday Bash
On the most important day of the season - the Captain’s birthday - the ever‑diminishing Ladies 4s turned up ready to celebrate, compete, and conquer.
In the changing rooms, the birthday girl reminded everyone that we were officially safe in the league and that these last 3 games should be about having some fun. And that we did.
Even though she wasn’t playing, Ella still made her presence felt… by forgetting to give the match balls to Hannah. Yes, the same Hannah she literally lives with. Donkey nomination secured before warm‑up.
The team were delighted to be joined by Millie L and Lisa B, both fresh from growing tiny humans.
And Lisa B wasted absolutely no time reminding everyone of her powers. Just 60 seconds into the match, she smashed home a goal, announcing her comeback with dramatic flair and excellent mum‑energy. To honour this legendary moment, there will be a special podcast edition where Lisa will walk listeners through a slow-motion, deeply emotional reenactment of her first‑minute worldie.
The squad kept up the momentum, dominating the game with some genuinely gorgeous hockey and stacking up a very satisfying tally with Jo and Callia both securing 2 more goals each.
The opposition managed a single reply. The initial shot was brilliantly saved by keeper Hannah, but chaos followed when Kirsty was knocked, and bashed into Hannah, leaving her off balance as the opposition poked the ball through.
Final score 5-1.
Birthday victory for Captain Lisa delivered, wrapped, and topped with a bow.
Player went to Imogen who was absolutely sensational everywhere on the pitch.
Despite not even playing, donkey went to Ella for forgetting to hand over the balls. Even though she wasn’t playing was still in everyone’s minds!

With Club Chairman Josh Chapman famously priding himself on being available most weeks when fit and never shy of reminding teammates that donning the glorious blue and pink of Broxbourne should always come before other leisure activities it was perhaps the ultimate irony that he was absent this week away in Rome watching the rugby. With the chairman missing from the team sheet, it seemed only right that this week’s Broxbourne Badgers match report adopted a distinctly rugby flavoured tone.
Broxbourne travelled to face an in form Old Loughts side sitting a couple of places above the Badgers in the table. The warm up had the feel of a rugby sevens tournament rather than a full hockey fixture as Broxbourne began proceedings with a bare 11 players, hardly a full pack for the scrums ahead.
The Badgers were already missing forward Toby House now sidelined with his second injury of the season after controversially ditching his pink scrum cap only weeks earlier. The result, a troublesome hamstring strain. The team will certainly miss their talented and in true rugby terms, impressively sized forward presence in the attacking pack.
Fortunately, reinforcements arrived early in the first half as experienced forward Rob and pacey midfielder Iain jogged onto the pitch around ten minutes in swelling the ranks to a slightly healthier squad of 13, still more bench than sin bin but enough to steady the ship.
As has become something of a Badgers tradition this season, Broxbourne found themselves trailing in the second quarter, Old Loughts breaking the deadlock in a move that cut through the defence like a well worked backline play. But Broxbourne responded quickly showing the kind of resilience usually reserved for sides defending their try line.
A well worked short corner routine, think of it as the hockey equivalent of a training ground line out move, resulted in veteran attacker Chris Hopson slipping the ball neatly under the keeper to level the scores. Conversion successful. 1 1.
The second half began with Old Loughts bursting out of the blocks like a pack charging from the scrum. One of their forwards produced a deft lob over goalkeeper Joe restoring their lead and leaving Broxbourne briefly staring at the posts again.
But if there is one thing the Badgers have shown this season it is that they are among the best teams in the world when chasing the game. With the urgency of a side down on the scoreboard Broxbourne piled forward.
Once again Hoppo delivered the goods. After some silky play from forward Sam Groves who ghosted through defenders like a winger finding space on the outside, the ball was squared to Hopson at the back post for his second, tapping home to bring the Badgers level once more.
Momentum firmly swung Broxbourne’s way. Newly called up England international, Tom Hopson dictated play from the back, marshalling possession with the composure of a fly half controlling territory.
The go ahead goal arrived soon after. Midfielder Iain found himself with space in the D and lifted a teasing flick across goal toward the back post where Sam Groves was waiting, the easiest of finishes to tap Broxbourne ahead for the first time in the match. Try scored under the posts, conversion unnecessary.
With Old Loughts pushing hard for a late equaliser, throwing bodies forward like a team chasing a final minute score, the ball broke to Ed House on the counter. Suddenly Broxbourne had a three on one opportunity.
Now normally the rugby instincts would serve the midfielder well, the ball must always go backwards after all, but this time the only option was straight ahead. Confusion reigned, the move fizzled out and the chance disappeared quicker than a winger stepping into touch.
The moment later earned Ed the coveted Dick of the Day award, though in fairness, had his teammates let him know that he was in a three on one scenario, the outcome may have been different.
Broxbourne held firm in the closing stages defending like a side protecting a narrow lead with the clock in the red and the final whistle confirmed another three valuable points for the Badgers.
The victory lifts Broxbourne up to 8th place in the league steering them well clear of relegation trouble and setting them up nicely for the final two fixtures of the season as they aim to push toward mid table respectability.
Next week the squad piles into the minibus north to Kings Lynn to face high flying Pelicans and reassuringly the ever reliable chairman Josh Chapman will return to the fold after his Roman rugby pilgrimage.
Until then

Ladies 1s vs Cambridge Uni 2 - 3-1 win
Goal scorers: Em, Paris & Ellie
Assists: Sophie, Becky & Ellie
Player: Hallie
Donkey: Paris
Broxbourne’s antepenultimate game of the season against Cambridge Uni 2s began with an inspiring team talk from Az. Whether the motivation fully landed is debatable, as a portion of the squad became strangely fixated on Paris’ Play-Doh knees during the build-up. Focus may have wavered, but spirits were high and the team took to the pitch ready for action.
Broxbourne wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. An early short corner saw Bench fire the initial shot towards goal, where Paris was perfectly placed to get a deft deflection, sending the ball flying into the top of the net. A dream start. Unfortunately, the lead didn’t last long, as Cambridge quickly won a corner of their own and struck back on the second phase to level things up (albeit with a little extra time to play due to some questionable timing by the umpires)
The half continued with some lively attacking play. Lydia put in some excellent work creating opportunities, while Hallie could be seen charging through the middle with the subtlety of a freight train, barging her way past defenders and keeping the Cambridge back line on their toes. Several chances came agonisingly close before Broxbourne finally broke through again.
Em decided subtlety wasn’t necessary and absolutely thundered the ball into the bottom corner with what can only be described as a hooter of a strike. The goal came after some brilliant individual skill, with great attacking support from Ellie helping to keep the pressure on. Broxbourne headed into half time 2–1 up.
The third quarter was a showcase of Broxbourne’s defensive solidity. The back line held firm with calm, organised defending, while Martha dictated play through midfield with composure. Meanwhile, debutant Sophie slotted seamlessly into the team, covering ground across the pitch and linking play with impressive confidence.
The final quarter saw Broxbourne extend their lead thanks to a moment of brilliant teamwork. Sophie embarked on a determined run across the field, creating space and setting the stage for Ellie to finish the move superbly and slot home Broxbourne’s third.
With the final whistle blown, it was a strong team performance and an all-round great day out for Broxbourne.

*Badgers No Match for The Bar*
Broxbourne Men’s 2s returned to the Badger Den this week looking to build on the momentum from last weekend’s result. The week prior, the 2s faced St Albans 4s and produced an impressive performance, securing a 3–1 victory and claiming a much-needed three points as the season edges towards its conclusion.
As always, spirits in the dressing room were high before pushback, despite the fact that the squad was a little thin on the ground thanks to some questionable availability across the side. Nevertheless, the Badgers were in good voice and ready for the challenge ahead.
This week’s opposition came in the form of mid-table Potters Bar 1s, a side that has enjoyed a strong season and has consistently gone toe-to-toe with some of the tougher teams in the league.
The warm-up duties were taken on by Sully, who decided to mix things up slightly compared to the usual routine. However, since Sully is famously fit as a fiddle, the altered warm-up ticked all the boxes from his perspective, so the team followed suit and got themselves ready for the game.
The first half proved to be a cagey affair. Both teams went end-to-end without either side truly managing to get a foothold in the match. The Badgers showed flashes of quality, moving the ball around nicely in spells, but struggled to break down the experienced Potters Bar defence, who stood firm and absorbed the pressure well.
The breakthrough came just before half-time, and unfortunately it went the way of the visitors. Potters Bar fired the ball into the D, where a series of extremely fortunate deflections saw it ricochet around before eventually crashing into the backboard to give them a 1–0 lead.
At half-time, Captain Fantastic - better known as Will - kept the team talk positive. He highlighted that the team had created chances and moved the ball well across the pitch, but emphasised that what was needed was a bit more killer instinct from the forward line to turn those opportunities into goals.
The second half began brightly for the Badgers, who continued to probe and apply pressure on the Potters Bar defence. Despite several promising passages of play, the equaliser remained elusive as the visitors held firm.
Meanwhile, in classic Ruddy fashion, boredom appeared to set in and he decided to offer a few choice words in the direction of the Potters Bar players. Unsurprisingly, the attempted sledging didn’t quite land as intended. To make matters worse, several Men’s 1s and 3s players had gathered on the sideline to watch and took great delight in giving Ruddy a steady stream of pelters for most of the second half—largely justified, it must be said.
Despite the Badgers’ continued effort, the final whistle eventually blew with the score remaining 1–0 to Potters Bar. Another tough game at the Badger Den for the Men’s 2s, and one where there were plenty of chances to take something from the match. The missed opportunities were certainly on the minds of the players back in the dressing room afterwards.
Man of the Match went to Stu for an outstanding defensive display, combined with several adventurous (and slightly alarming) nosebleed-inducing runs into the attacking half.
Dick of the Day was awarded to Ruddy - largely because he’s Ruddy (he is quite large to be fair). An honourable mention also goes to Hugh for a particularly nasty tackle in the second half, followed by continuing to engage in play despite being well within five yards after the free-hit had already been given against him.
Next week sees the 2s make the long round trip to Bedford for the penultimate game of the season, where they’ll be hoping to bounce back quickly from this week’s narrow defeat.

Staples Jr and Wilkinson combine to sink St Albans on ice-rink Oaklands surface*
Before we begin, a small disclaimer. Last week’s match report included several light-hearted references to Donald Trump invading various countries. We would like to state for the record that Broxbourne 4s had absolutely no prior knowledge that he would shortly afterwards be involved in a war with Iran. Fortunately for Broxbourne, the situation did not escalate to the point where Prime Minister Keir Starmer felt the need to conscript our veteran players — meaning the squad was able to field its usual complement of experienced campaigners rather than being deployed to the Middle East.
Broxbourne 4s therefore made the trip to Oaklands to face St Albans 9s on a pitch that looked immaculate but played like it had been prepared for Olympic curling rather than hockey.
The visitors arrived with a depleted squad after the 2s and 3s had requisitioned players higher up the club — in scenes not unlike a naval press gang sweeping the docks for able-bodied men. Reinforcements were therefore summoned. Kevin House answered the call once again, emerging from retirement more times than Tyson Fury and proudly sporting the new skin-tight Broxbourne kit. It looked suspiciously pristine, with rumours circulating it may have been repurchased from Vinted earlier in the week.
With several veterans returning to the field, the average age of the side briefly crept high enough that the warm-up could easily have doubled as a mobility session at the local retirement home.
John Edwards was also drafted in from the 5s with the promise of reforming the legendary 2003 Broxbourne defensive partnership with Andy Bourke. Sadly the reunion lasted roughly the length of the warm-up before Bourke was whisked away to strengthen the 3s — yet another reminder that veteran players remain the backbone of the club, even if the club itself occasionally redistributes them like cabinet posts.
The game began with real energy after an inspirational team talk from Trevor about quick passing, smart decisions and supporting teammates. Trevor then immediately forgot all of that advice and planted himself squarely in the middle of the pitch, effectively building a defensive wall that Donald Trump himself might have admired — strong in theory, slightly confusing in execution, and leaving everyone else wondering how exactly they were supposed to get around it.
Broxbourne nevertheless started brightly. Joseph made several excellent runs down the right flank, showing strong stick skills and linking well with Henry Staples. On the opposite side Harrison caused equal problems, stretching the St Albans defence and creating several promising attacking opportunities.
Up front Simon Prentice led the line in a style reminiscent of Long John Silver — largely because he appeared to be operating on only one functioning knee. The exact cause of the injury remains unclear, although club doctors suspect it may have been aggravated by excessive running… to the bar. Despite this he held the ball up well and repeatedly attempted his now-trademark shot through his legs. Unfortunately, with two legs still technically attached this also resulted in several enthusiastic foot infringements — which he insisted were fake news.
Richard Mellor patrolled midfield following his recent investigation by WADA authorities into substances potentially inhaled through his vape. Cleared to play, Mellor appeared to be operating with Formula One-style energy bursts — deploying impressive acceleration down the straights before running out of battery roughly twenty feet later.
A moment of confusion briefly gave Broxbourne supporters a scare (not ideal for those of us with atrial fibrillation). Veteran goalkeeper Paul Staples could be clearly heard shouting:
“Right shoulder! Right shoulder! Five yards!”
Danny, after years of over-reliance on GPS, moved confidently in entirely the wrong direction — opening up a gap that John Edwards had already predicted several seconds earlier like Mystic Meg reading tomorrow’s headlines.
Otherwise Staples enjoyed a relatively quiet first half in goal, something he was grateful for having only recently dusted off his kit and not wishing to get it wet.
The second half saw St Albans apply more pressure and they earned a couple of short corners. One produced a moment of unintended comedy when the St Albans striker appeared to suffer the yips and topped the ball so badly it rolled agonisingly slowly toward goal — think Wayne’s World slow motion. Staples, already sprawled across the line in what could generously be described as a “prolapsed goalkeeper” position, somehow managed a Russian-style kick clearance to keep the ball out.
That moment seemed to galvanise Broxbourne.
Not long afterwards the decisive breakthrough arrived. A St Albans hit-out was intercepted by Henry Staples, who surged forward like a stealth torpedo locking onto a target. He exchanged a quick one-two with Ollie Wilkinson, whose quick thinking and rapid stick skills allowed him to slip past a defender before returning the pass. Receiving the ball just outside the right side of the D, Henry fired a crisp shot into the bottom corner.
From the back came the unmistakable voice of John Edwards shouting:
“Is that really Staples’ son? He got it on target!”
Thankfully the youth coaching from Josh and Sam has clearly been paying dividends.
Henry later suggested he may have been attempting a pass to Simon Prentice, although that explanation was quietly withdrawn once the goal was confirmed.
Broxbourne now led 1–0 and looked comfortable for the remainder of the match. Harrison produced another surging run down the left that caused chaos in the St Albans circle, while Prentice — now using the goalpost as a personal support rail — managed to strike the woodwork twice in quick succession. At one stage he was also spotted searching for the red emergency cord, a habit many of the squad have apparently developed from their time in their retirement homes.
Despite the treacherous surface and the occasional dramatic tumble — particularly from goal scorer Henry Staples, who spent so much time hitting the turf it began to look as though he’d been picked off by an unseen sniper somewhere in the Oaklands stands — Broxbourne maintained control and calmly saw out the final minutes.
The Verdict
It was not the most spectacular match ever played, but it was a professional performance from a patched-together Broxbourne side.
One moment of quality between Henry Staples and Ollie Wilkinson proved enough.
Kevin House postponed retirement for at least another week.
Paul Staples kept his goalkeeping kit largely dry — a result he appeared almost as pleased with as the clean sheet.
And if Oaklands gets any more slippery next season, Broxbourne may need to start issuing skates instead of hockey boots — though given the squad’s average age, a few Zimmer frames might also help.

The Ladies 3’s took on top of the table Shefford and Sandy away.
The team came second.
Notable mention goes to Fixter for her superb (unintentional) deflection, which journeyed in slow motion to hit the back board.
It was a tough day at the office but onwards and upwards.
Good luck to Shefford and Sandy in their promotion bid and thanks for the pizza!

After successfully dodging Donkey all season, I finally pushed my luck too far by turning up a whole five minutes before pushback so alas I am here with the match report.
We got off to a slightly shady start, conceding two early goals and giving Havering the kind of confidence no team really deserves. However, after a fiery team talk from our captain (pep talk level: mildly terrifying but effective), we woke up and clawed it back to 2–2 with some aggressive attacking play and solid defending across the pitch.
Goal 1: a thunderous straight strike from Gem that was expertly finished off by defender Emily, who clearly decided defending alone was far too boring.
Goal 2: I unfortunately cannot remember the exact details of this one—my sincere apologies—but I’m absolutely certain it was both brilliant and well deserved.
Our comeback seemed to rattle the opposition slightly. In the confusion they briefly forgot we were playing hockey and switched to wrestling instead, choosing Darcy in particular as their practice partner. After appealing this behaviour, we gathered for another team discussion and collectively concluded (in the captain’s exact words) that the umpire had, unfortunately, lost the plot.
Despite the chaos, Havering managed to convert two short corners to take the score to 4–2. To our credit, heads didn’t drop and we continued pressing for the rest of the game, creating several more chances and making them work far harder than they probably expected.
No one could fault the effort in the second half—it was a strong performance from the whole team, even if the result didn’t quite go our way. I’m sure we will keep this up for our last couple of games of the season.
As for my personal revenge for being given Donkey… I took a leisurely stroll along the M25 afterwards, impersonating a donkey, causing maximum disruption for everyone trying to get home.
You’re welcome.

A gutsy performance holding on to a 1 goal lead for 66 minutes!
On the back of a devastating loss last week the 5’s were determined not to lose this week at any cost.
With the return of some veterans to the squad, who thought they could have a week off and a change of personnel in goal. Hannah (stepping up to help the 4’s) left us with no captain and without a keeper, so up stepped reserve keeper Sharon White.
After an hours drive to the middle of nowhere and another D of E expedition hike to the loos, the 5’s completed their individual warmups, all expect Teagan who was yet to arrive. Vice captain Milly was starting to have a rethink on the intense subbing schedule she’d been working on the last couple of days - plan B. Then during the warm-up Mumma B felt she needed to repeat the D of E hike and wasn't sure if she'd be back before the start - plan C. But to the relief of the 5’s Teagan arrived just in time to join Milly's team talk and Mumma B returned to the squad- back to plan A.
The game started with Broxbourne dominating from the pushback and within 4 mins, Milly out on the left found the always present Tess with a lovely pass at the halfway line, with 1 strong direct pass into the final 3rd to find the stick of Daniela, passing 2 defenders and drawing the keeper to her left, it was slotted pass the keeper on her right to put Broxbourne 1 nil up.
Then the hard work began. Broxbourne continued to press a very shocked Royston team who didn’t expect to be 1 nil down so soon into the game, but the defence of Lorraine , Bryony, Teagan, Francesca and sub Amiee, held them at bay, with some fantastic saves from Sharon. Midway into the half Royston found themselves in front of the Broxbourne goal with the ball finding its way into the back of net, only for the goal to be disallowed by the umpire the ball hit her shoulder which influenced the ball and therefore was disallowed keeping the score at 0v1 to Broxbourne. Royston had some very skilled younger players, but Broxbourne held stronger to take the game to half time 1 nil up .
The halftime team talk was a positive reflection on the first half, but also a discussion on how to protect the ball and to manage the amount of stick challenges both teams were be being pulled up for throughout the first half.
The second half started with the same intensity as the first half Broxbourne having loads of possession, the midfield off Tess, Annie, Shannon, and Mumma B, working tirelessly to intercept the passes and runs from a very frustrated Royston team. Broxbourne found themselves defending deeper and deeper into the second half, but a lovely interceptive pass by Maisie who then found Teagan, free to have a run into the final third with a lovely slap at pace into the D towards Daniela who decided it was too hard to stop, left the ball to run past her to the eagerly awaiting Milly on the left post, but unfortunately it was not meant to be.
With eight minutes left on the clock, Broxbourne tried to slow the game down, but maybe a bit a bit too slow as Lorraine was deemed to have taken too long on a sideline ball deep in Broxbourne’s half that the umpire decided to turn the ball over to Royston to Lorraine‘s dissapointment. With minutes to go and 10 Broxbourne players behind the ball Mia was our only outlet and with a lovely pass from Bryony saw Mia run 2/3 of the pitch to the oppositions D on a fantastic solo run but was outnumbered.
Seconds later, a full-time whistle went and to the relief of a very tired Broxbourne team a vital 4th win of the season.
The relegation battle is still on with three games still to play every point and goal counts.
Would like to thank our coach Terry for his help with the subbing and sideline coaching.
Next week we are away 10am WGC who sit 2nd in league so another tough match .
Contenders for donkey this week was a hard call as everyone played really well. But the main two votes were for Lorraine for her time wasting skills but yet again donkey went to Tess for asking at the end of the game if we had won, thinking it was 1 v 1!!
Player votes were a good mix , with the whole Team vote, Amiee and Annie getting a vote, Teagan got a vote for her lovely run and pass, same for Bryony with her hits and interceptions. Daniela was next with 3 votes for her great goal, runs up the wing and her on pitch coaching but with 5 votes for an excellent performance in goal and clean sheet player went to Sharon.

The M3s leave no man behind (a military view)
Sometimes, mobilizing a hockey squad is more complex than a strategic offensive on the front lines. This week, the M3s faced a logistical nightmare that would make a General weep.
The Recruitment Crisis.
By Wednesday 0900 hours, the situation was dire. We were down to 9 active personnel. Intelligence reports indicated that troops from the 2nd Battalion (the 2s) were also AWOL, languishing with a skeleton crew of 9.
Captain Si and Captain Jase abandoned their civilian posts for the remainder of the week to initiate emergency conscription. In a high-stakes tactical reshuffle:
Privates Hugh and Stu were redeployed to the 2nd Battalion, leaving the M3s with a depleted unit of 7.
A distress signal was beamed to the 4th Battalion.
Privates Luke, Kieran O, Bourkey, and Ryan answered the call to arms. Disaster struck again when Si was sidelined by a shingles-related injury, but Logan stepped up as the courageous recruit to fill the breach. Specialist Cranners was left visibly shell-shocked by a formation that featured two technical keepers—a strategy so unorthodox it bordered on kamikaze.
The Logistics Maneuver.
By Friday, we had a full platoon of 11, but the problem was how to transport them to the front line in Bedford. The Royal Logistics Corps protocol was enacted:
• Transport: Drivers designated.
• Payload: Players allocated to vehicles.
• H-Hour: Departure times synchronized.
However, in a breach of protocol, and we may never know how, Private Noah was left behind at the base (bar). Showing true valor, despite being halfway to Bedford (well nearly and the story wouldn't sound as dramatic if he was actually only in Hoddesdon) Kieron P executed a tactical U-turn , rescuing the stranded youth and ensuring no man was left behind.
The skirmish in Bedford was a brutal encounter. We suffered a 5-0 defeat, though considering the makeshift nature of our battalion, we avoided a total rout.
MoM went to James, for I guess running a lot and keeping the ball away from the opposition. Thanks to all the guys that helped (including Moorhouse snr and jnr) and of course to those 3s regulars that kept the engine going.
DoD to our new Left Back (in the bar) Noah.
Next week is our last home match of the season as we remain entrenched in the fight for a top 3 finish.
Congratulations to Tom Hopson
A huge congratulations to Tom Hopson who has been selected for the England U15s squad. He will head to the Netherlands soon to compete in the 6 Nations tournament. Well done Tom, we're all proud of you!
