After suffering defeat to local rivals St Albans last week Broxbourne were on the road looking for victory against a so far unsuccessful Harleston Magpies. Missing a few key players: Kay Finch (pursuing professional marathon career), Em Wilkins and Gemma Wilkinson (educating young minds) they knew they would be up against it.
Broxbourne started slowly, a long car journey and the previous night's festivities taking their toll against a youthful Harleston side. However they soaked up the early pressure and held firm.
After a closely contested twenty minutes the deadlock was broken when Broxbourne caught the opposition off guard with a quickly taken hit out. Good interchanging play between Miranda Hall and seasoned veteran Lucy Heyes resulted in the ball ending up at the feet of Charlotte Skipp who calmly slotted home.
Broxbourne doubled their lead shortly before half time with a well won short corner by Hall. After the initial set piece broke down, a rebound shot and well timed deflection by Mar Copues wrong footed the keeper putting Broxbourne 2-0 to the good.
Harleston started the second half ferociously and eventually their persistence, coupled with some questionable umpiring decisions, resulted in them clawing a goal back to take the score to 2:1.
The final few minutes were frantically contested with both teams giving their all. The Harleston onslaught continued however they were unable to convert thanks to solid defensive performances from Becky Pratt and Lisa Banahan. A succession of conceded short corners saw the Broxbourne coach with his head in his hands and a sigh of relief was breathed all round as the final whistle blew.
The result; a well battled 2:1 victory with Broxbourne reaping the rewards for taking their chances.
Broxbourne hope to continue their good fortune next week at home against recently demoted Bedford.
