Wilkinson strikes again!!!

The Badgers went into Saturday's match the underdogs, facing a strong side from Cambridge University, they battled hard and were unlucky not to get a point from the match.
It was Broxbourne that better side, piling the pressure onto the visitors, Some lovely interplay between midfielders Emily Wilkins, Laura Wills and forward Gemma Wilkinson saw the Badgers keeping the ball deep in Cambridge territory. Both Wilks and Wilkinson succeeded in gaining a string of penalty corners, drawing several fouls from Cambridge defenders, unfortunately Broxbourne were unable to utilise any of this advantage and it was Cambridge who broke the deadlock first. A rare counter attack caught Broxbourne unaware and the Cambridge forwards were able to take the lead. It was Cambridge who scored the only other goal in the first half, despite some strong tackling from Lisa Banahan and Pip Evans, the half time whistle saw the Badgers facing a 2-0 deficit.
Again it was Broxbourne who started off the stronger team in the second half, more excellent play by Wills and Wilkins in midfield saw the Badgers on the attack again. It was Wills who managed to lay the ball off to Kay Finch who won the home side yet another penalty corner. An excellent strike by Wilkins was deflected into the back of the net by Becci Pratt, a dream come true for Pratt as her first goal in her hockey career.
Again against the run of play Cambridge scored again, despite a number of truly inspired saves by keeper Kim Bames. This spurred Broxbourne on and another attack again saw the trio of Wilks, Wilkins and Wilkinson pushing the play forward, an absolutely magnificent reverse stick pass from Wilkins fell directly into the waiting stick of Wilkinson who managed to ping the ball off of the post and across the line, there was some controversy as to wether seasoned attacker Miranda Hall got a touch to the ball before it crossed the line but it was clear to everyone other then Hall that it was a Wilkinson goal!
The Badgers put together several more probing attacks but the final score finished at 3-2 with the Badgers still in desperate need of some points if they are to avoid relegation.
