Badgers are docile animals unless provoked. The Broxbourne Ladies 1s mirrored our spirit animal in our match against Chelmsford 2s on Saturday.
A sleepy start allowed our green foes to get the better of us early on and a well practiced short corner saw them go one up within the first 10 minutes. The badgers leapt into action. Silky skills throughout the pitch, great communication and rock solid defence. There was little Chelmsford could do.
The first goal came off the stick of Alice Brown in a perfectly timed short corner. It may have been 1-1 going into half time, but Broxbourne knew they had the upper hand.
The second half saw each section of the pitch put into practice the ‘pie charts’ – our priorities for the game (the brainchild of captain/maths genius Lisa Banahan). Soon into the second half Jess Iszatt took an almighty swing at the ball which flew towards the keeper and was batted into the corner again by Brown. 2-1 Badgers.
There was still time for one more. Becky Watkins powered around their forwards, midfielders and defenders before smashing the ball towards the back post. Kerri Marshall's stick was exactly where it needed to be and the ball hit the net. 3-1.
Watkins’ dominance throughout the pitch earnt her player of the match this week. And although Freya Green proved as effective as ever in goal, her inability to create a pie chart made her the donkey. A great return to form for the badgers, we’re ready to take on second place Crostyx next week in what is likely to be one of the most important games of the season.
