It was an exciting day for the Badgers they had the exciting prospect of a night out to look forward too but they needed to ensure they kept their minds on what turned out to be a physical game!
It was the Badgers who made the better start, they dominated the first ten minutes of possession, bidding the midfield and creating several chances. St Albans responded by reverting to an overly physical game which thwarted any early badger attacks.
It was in fact St Albans who broke the deadlock first with a break away goal five minutes before half time. Broxbourne responded the only way they knew how and only two minutes later Claire "Cat" Cattermole made a beautiful pass through to Emma Wilkins who, rather than her usual bruiser moves, made a well timed pass through to Kerri (with an i) Marshall who was able to slot the ball straight past the keeper to level the scores going into half time.
Matt McDonnell produced a rousing team talk which inspired the Badgers to keep on pushing for a win. Several controversial decisions led to Broxbourne being reduced to 10 players twice but the forward line of Marshall, Skipp and Wilkinson bravely filled in on the back line preventing St Albans from scoring.
Freya Green, Broxbourne’s (MVP) goal keeper showed that even goalies can make amazing tackles by keeping the useful St Albans centre forward from scoring in a series of one on one moves. However with minutes left on the clock it was St Albans who sneaked a goal from a short corner to take the lead.
This is when Broxbourne proved you should never count out a Badger! With just 1 minute left on the clock they won a short corner. Nerves of steel saw Becky "the Bench" Scarrott strike the ball straight into the back of the net.
Broxbourne can be happy with a point but they are determined to win all three on the return fixture against Wapping at Badger Field next week.
