Broxbourne 7 Wapping 3's 1

Broxbourne rolled to an impressive 7-1 win against Wapping 3’s on what should have been the opening day of the 2020-21 season at an unseasonably warm Badger Field. The only sour note was the game counted for zero points with the start of the league season pushed back a week.

It was a quiet summer on the transfer front for the Badgers, budgets were slashed due the global pandemic and no new faces arrived at Mill Lane Close. Broxbourne did receive a boost though when Louis Scarrott decided after a summer of soul searching to withdraw from The World’s Strongest Fireman competition to focus on his hockey career.

Whether Scarrott knew he was signing up for a starting berth at left back is unclear, but the hulking fire fighter slotted straight in and gave the Badgers an extremely attacking left flank with his brother Ben further up the channel.

The Badgers made a strong start and took the lead in the 5th minute when Mitch Chapman finished a short corner won by Chris Hopson.

The lead was short lived, and the Londoners were soon level when they converted a short corner of their own.
Broxbourne soon shook off the disappointment of conceding and retook the lead through Stan Mason who reacted quickest to a rebound from a short corner.

The Badgers were relentless after that with further goals from Charlie Frederick, Josh Chapman, Ben Scarrott 2 and Toby House completing a convincing win. If not for an impressive display by the Wapping keeper the Badgers could have had a lead in the double digits.

Next week the league season starts for real with the Badgers on the road against Sudbury.
