Broxbourne (4’s) - 1 vs Cheshunt (3’s) - 0 (Nil) 17th September 2016
This opening fixture of the season brought together a local derby between these two teams. Broxbourne’s captain Matt Cassling fresh from steering Broxbourne’s 5ths to promotion last season adopted a very attacking 3-3-4 formation. With Kev House being the anchor man up front and Ed House just behind with the youth of Lee Richards and Sam Groves on the wings.
Broxbourne started the game on the front foot with the midfield trio of Cassling, McDonnell and Roland dominating possession. Broxbourne created many chances but for Cheshunt’s man of the match goal keeper the game could have been all wrapped up after 20 minutes. Like many local derby’s, Cheshunt were not giving up on this one and looked strong on the counter attack. However, very little was going to get past the experience of Rudd, Green and Kent. With half - time approaching, the Broxbourne keeper ‘Charlie’ had very little to do and must be wondering whether his match fees were worth paying.
As the second half came around, Broxbourne continued to dominate with Mark Rudd and Kev House switching around up top every so often as well as the introduction of Jon Edwards and Giles Weblin solidifying the already solid defence of Broxbourne. As the minutes went on, the game was becoming tighter with Broxbourne just having the upper hand.
The game was crying out for a goal. Matt Cassling picked up his usual green card! Shortly after the ball was played down the right to the elegant, skilful Ed House who played a pin point pass across the 'D' to Lee Richards waiting eagerly to put the ball in the goal which he did with ease and precision.
This put Broxbourne into a 1-0 lead. The rest of the game followed at a continual high pace, some chances falling to Cheshunt, finally giving the Broxbourne goalie something to do.
Broxbourne continued to make chances which they were unable to capitalise on as the minutes ran out for Cheshunt. With some excellent hold up play by Mark Rudd upfront, Broxbourne ended the game with a 1-0 win.
A deserved victory for Broxbourne and as captain Matt Cassling described it as a 1-0 thrashing, Broxbourne came away with three points to start the season.
