After a strong start to the season with a win in both of their opening games, Broxbourne men’s 4’s run of form came to an unfortunate end with a controversial loss to Hertford 4’s.
Broxbourne started off the game with their usual 3-3-4 formation with Charlie Wooten starting in goal supported by the likes of John Edwards, Giles Weblin and Ollie Price in defence. Further forward the midfield line consisted of captain Matt Cassling, Nick Rowland, Rich NZ, Mike Walton and Trevor Walton, while leading the front was Lee Richards and Ed House. The subs consisted of Tim McDonnell and Arnie Vaughan.
Broxbourne began the match with a high pressing game plan forcing Hertford back into their own half struggling to handle with the intensity thrown at them. Whilst this effort was maintained and Broxbourne were relatively comfortable and creating many chances, we lacked the final piece of the jigsaw and were unable to score, inevitably this ended with Hertford going a goal up against the run of play. This resulted in Broxbourne lacking confidence and giving the ball away too easily, although Broxbourne continued to be the stronger of the two teams late into the first half, they conceded once again to a controversial short corner. However, it was rewarded as a goal, and Broxbourne were 2-0 down going into the break.
As the second half began, Broxbourne once again came out the more positive pushing and winning the ball deep into Hertford’s half, this consequently led to a bit of intricate play and Matt Cassling firing the ball in to make it 2-1 and bring Broxbourne back into contention. However, it wouldn’t be right if captain Matt Cassling didn’t pick up his traditional green card for the game although this wouldn’t affect the teams attacking mentality. Further on into the match Broxbourne began to switch off and one second of a loss of concentration led to one of the Hertford players being left unmarked and to run through on goal and finish emphatically with a chip over the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 3-1. As the game began to close in on the final whistle, Broxbourne galvanised for the last 10 minutes to completely dominate the field and create chance after chance which eventually led to yet another goal for Matt Cassling to make it 3-2 and lead to a hectic finish which unfortunately didn’t result in any further goals although Ed House did manage to pick up a green card late on in the game.
Despite the loss, Broxbourne 4’s will be back to their best again next match.
