Rainy first league game

For many, the prospect of a 4.30 away game on a Saturday is never really that appealing, but add in non stop rain (Jean was playing), wind and no subs, the appeal becomes even less. This was the welcome that awaited the 3s first league game of the season at Hertford. It’s safe to say that most did not want to leave the warmth of their cars to warm up, whilst some did not even realise it was a league game and not a friendly (Bryony!).
For the line up, the 3s had some new additions to the team from the previous week’s game at Welwyn, which included Meg Williams, Annie Thomas and our very last minute but gratefully welcomed player Laura Seaman, all of whom made up our forward line. In midfield were another new addition from last week, Sue Thomas, alongside Hannah Baker, Alice Waller and Jean Spencer. Our fortress at the back were Lisa, Bryony and Rosie with Emma in goal, as ever ready to commentate on the match.
Most likely due to the rain and people concentrating on what they might like for dinner, the 3s started cautiously but were soon in control of the game. The team began to seamlessly link between defence, midfield and the forward line and from right to left, with plenty of talking and awareness of where each other was. It appeared that all of the training and pep talks had finally settled in with the team performing as one unit, making short easy passes to make their way up the pitch and rarely losing the ball except for Hertford to pinging it back out of their D. As a result, goals soon started raining in from Meg, Annie and Alice, with other close calls from Laura, Hannah and Rosie, and Broxbourne walked in at half time 6-0 up. Lisa gave a very brief half time talk encouraging us to carry on doing what we were doing, whilst the remainder of us filled up on the obligatory half time haribos.
The second half was still dominated by Broxbourne, but Hertford began to pick up their players more and worked the ball between them better than they had in the first half. This meant that they did break into our d a couple of times, but our strong defensive line coupled with Emma being prepared to save whatever came her way meant we were able to keep our clean sheet. This added with another goal each from Meg and Annie (remember you both owe us a jug ?) left us with an 8-0 win and top of the league after the first week, making the late push back and pouring rain well worth it! Well done ladies, and thank you to our die hard supporters for staying out in the rain too #terrysupdates.
