good luck charm

This week’s match had many a resemblance to the league opener with another wet late fixture, but this time at Harpenden.
Broxbourne were keen to make amends for the previous week (although were reluctant again to leave the warmth of the changing room) and much of the team remained the same with Annie Thomas, Meg Russell Williams and Hannah Baker returning to start.
Broxbourne started in an attacking fashion, despite a slightly water logged pitch, and were quick to open the scoring with a lovely goal from Meg. Harpenden soon replied to make it 1-1, but rather than hamper Broxbourne’s spirits it seemed to ignite their want to win and quickly they regained control of the match. For the remainder of the first half, Broxbourne hammered balls into the D from neatly worked team passes up the pitch, with lots of shots on target made and numerous short corners won. Eventually a beautiful cross from Meg to Annie displaced the goalie and allowed Annie to place the ball into the centre of the backboard.
With a 2-1 lead at half time, the team were keen to keep up the momentum in the second half. Much like the latter stages of the first half Harpenden barely made headway into the Broxbourne defensive 25, thanks mainly to Sue’s marking of their key player and the defence remaining alert, alongside Emma, to clear any balls that got into the D. Eventually, Broxbourne took advantage and further cemented their lead. A pass from Hannah to Meg, which stretched the Harpenden defence, gave Meg enough time to draw the goalie off her line and lob the ball over her head to make it 3-1.
More shots rained in from the forward and midfield line with even Bryony, Lisa and Rosie coming forward from defence to provide the crosses. Another goal came quickly from a Meg shot, saved by the goalie and slapped onto the backboard by Alice to make it 4-1.
Following this, a short period of play became controlled by Harpenden with the ball making it to the Broxbourne D. However, a threat never really troubled the defence or Emma and a quick clearance from the D allowed the ball to be played to Meg who copied her technique from her second to make the final score 5-1.
All in all, this showed a much better Broxbourne performance and showed what the team can actually play like together - and apparently we’re better in the rain!
Thanks must also go to Harpenden and their umpires for a friendly and well mannered game.
